ROOTED is a collection by JILLIAN ADEL that explores influence in active collaboration with environment and culture. each piece runs directly towards the song that is playing, the visuals that are surrounding, and the current moment as sparks to propel the weaving of thought and experience through these elements. in her continued mission of radical presence as resistance, each set of words acts as a verbal snapshot. and some are a veritable “where’s waldo” for musical influences, locations, and time markers. in a world that suffers from toxic individualism and is more isolated than ever, this project approaches influence in art as community building, a tether between the creation of one artist to another and between shared culture and place. celebrating the roots of each piece as a common language that might help us feel less alone and more available to build with and between each other, across place, moment, and medium. the aim is to honor and integrate the idea of building on each other’s work, and to remain curious about the structures around us, and breaking them down where necessary.
